ROCHESTER, NY – Junior
Luke Insley scored a career-high 16 points as Nazareth fell to the University of Rochester 83-66 on Thursday night in the Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout. Rochester scored the first points and led the rest of the way.
Nazareth drops to 1-2 with the loss, while Rochester improves to 2-1.
The Yellowjackets were red hot from the field in the opening half, shooting 57.1 percent, including 7-for-12 from deep (58 percent). The 15-point lead at the break was the largest of the half. Meanwhile, Nazareth shot 46.7 percent from the field (14-for-30) and 3-for-9 from 3-point range.
After trailing by seven early on,
Logan Blankenberg hit a 3-pointer to cut the U of R lead to 11-9 five minutes in.
Rochester built a lead of 31-17 at the 8:34 mark after going on a 20-8 run.
Nazareth chipped away to make it a 10 point margin at the break, 45-35.
At the 15:23 mark of the second, Nazareth sliced the margin to single digits at 51-43 following an Insley layup.
Insley was at it again later, converting a traditional 3-point play two cut the lead to 53-50 seven minutes into the half.
The lead remained three for the Yellowjackets at the midway point following a
Jack Broderick layup, making it 59-56.
The Golden Flyers kept it close at 66-61 following a
Tyler Putney triple with just over seven to play before Rochester pulled away.
Nazareth trailed 73-66 with 2:08 on the clock but the Yellowjackets scored the final 10 points of the game to seal the win.
Broderick poured in 14 points, nine rebounds, and three steals.
Jordan Haggard was also in double figures with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Nazareth will be back in action on Saturday for the Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout, taking on RIT at 8 p.m.
