Defense Carries Men’s Basketball to Opening Night Victory

ROCHESTER, NY – Junior Jack Broderick led four players into double-figures scoring with his game-high 22 points but it was a stingy defense that caused 19 turnovers that led to a convincing 91-65 victory for the Nazareth University Men's Basketball team over Buffalo State in the first game of the season and the opening round of the Mike Daley Memorial Tip-Off Tournament Friday night in Kidera Gymnasium.

Nazareth (1-0) will take on York (PA) in the tournament championship game at 3 p.m. Saturday after the Spartans defeated SUNY Canton 92-68. Canton and Buffalo State will play in the consolation game at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Golden Flyers used an early surge to take a double-digit lead in the first six minutes of the game as graduate student Logan Blankenberg capped an early run with a three-point play as Nazareth took a 15-5 lead.

A fast-break layup by sophomore transfer Tyler Putney gave Nazareth a lead of 13 points with a 21-8 advantage midway through the opening period.

Buffalo State (0-1) chipped away at the lead but a 9-0 Nazareth run extended the lead to 15 points at 36-21 with five minutes to play in the half.

Blankenberg added back-to-back baskets a minute later to give the Golden Flyers its largest lead in the half at 18 points and Nazareth went into the break with a 44-29 lead.

In the second half, Nazareth used another 9-0 run in the middle of the period to break open the game and take a 23-point lead at 67-44 as the Golden Flyers cruised to the victory with the entire team able to see playing time down the stretch.

Broderick led Nazareth with his 22 points and Blankenberg added 17 points nine rebounds and four steals. Junior Luke Insley and sophomore Solomon McFarlane chipped in 12 points each to pace the offense.
