ROCHESTER, NY – Senior
Matt Bamford scored his first goal of the season and
Jack Lannon added another to help Nazareth knock off Alfred 2-0 on Saturday in Empire 8 play.
Nazareth is now 8-2-1 and 3-1 in conference play, while Alfred drops to 4-5-3 and 1-3-1 in conference play.
The Golden Flyers cashed in off a corner kick in the 31
st minute. After the initial cross was punched away by the goalkeeper,
Michael Yates kept it in with a header from the top of the box. From there,
Ryan Fitzgerald, with his back to the goal, touched the ball back to Bamford for a one-time shot into the net.
With under 10 minutes to play in the half,
Cooper LaValley nearly made it 2-0, turning and ripping a shot from just above the 18-yard box, that forced the Alfred goalkeeper to sprawl out and push it over the crossbar.
The shots were seven apiece for each squad at the half and 18-18 for the game.
Early in the second,
Patrick Larkin had to dive to make an impressive save to his right and keep the Saxons off the board on a shot from just outside the 18-yard box. He finished the game with a career-high 11 saves.
The hosts pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 63
rd minute as
Noah Malta slid a pass between two defenders that Lannon slotted to the far post. Lannon has two goals on the season.
Nazareth will have a week off before traveling to Keuka on October 14 for a 1 p.m. contest.
