Field Hockey Erupts With First Win Of The Season Over Elmira, 7-0

ELMIRA, NY – Sophomore Audra Mieczkowski scored a hat trick, while four Golden Flyers scored for the first time in a 7-0 win over Elmira to guide Nazareth to its first win of the season. Sam Helmer, Jenna Guzzo, and Hailey Dimao all scored their first goals of the season in the Empire 8 conference matchup.

Nazareth (1-3 Empire 8, 1-9 overall) attacked first over Elmira (0-2 Empire 8, 1-4 overall) with a pair of goals scored by freshmen Sam Helmer and Jenna Guzzo - each their first collegiate goals. Junior Madison Chodkowski was granted the assist off a corner to Helmer with just over five minutes left in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Guzzo found the back of the net off a rebound from Elmira's goalie.

Nazareth doubled up their score within 1:22 of each other with goals by Dimao and Mieczkowski. Mieczkowski intercepted a goalie pass and crossed it to Dimao for the goal. Mieczkowski then scored her first goal of the game off a penalty corner.

It was 4-0 at the half.

In the second half, Mieczkowski attacked again with her second goal of the game by a cross from junior Lydia Coombs, pushing Nazareth to a 5-0 lead. Just over six minutes later, Helmer notched her second goal of the game off a pass from Dimao.

Mieczkowski scored her third goal in the fourth quarter, doubling her career goals to six. Nazareth finished with a shutout win and totaled 51 shots for the game. Morgan Russo made two saves in goal and picked up her first collegiate win.

The seven goals was Nazareth's most since their matchup last season (2022) against Elmira, a 12-0 win.

The Golden Flyers return to play in Oswego Tuesday, October 10 and with another Empire 8 Conference game at Utica on Saturday October 14.
