ROCHESTER, NY – Needing either a win or draw to secure a top 2 seed in the upcoming Empire 8 Championships, the Nazareth men's soccer team came up short with a 1-0 loss at St. John Fisher on Wednesday night. Nazareth is now the No. 3 seed for the Empire 8 Championships and will host No. 6 Alfred on Saturday in the quarterfinals with a time to be determined. Nazareth defeated Alfred 2-0 at home during the regular season on October 7.
Elmira (5-0-3) secured the top overall seed, while St. John (5-0-3) is the No. 2 seed, both earning a first round bye. Hartwick (4-2-2) is the No. 4 seed and Utica (3-3-2) the No. 5 seed.
Nazareth is now 10-3-2 on the season and 5-2-1 in Empire 8 play, while Fisher is 6-4-5 and 5-0-23, respectively.
The lone goal of the game came off a cross that was headed into the net in the 53
rd minute.
Nazareth held a 15-10 edge in shots and 8-3 margin in corner kicks but were unable to find the back of the net.
Jack Lannon had a rip from the 18-yard box early in the second half that went just over the cross bar.
Dominic Marino had a strong opportunity in the 75
th minute as he tried to chip the ball of the Cardinals goalkeeper who was off his line but it was tipped over the bar.
Patrick Larkin finished with five saves.
