ALBANY, NY – Sophomore Jenna Mattison led four players into double digit digs with 18 and the team combined for 16 blocks as the Nazareth University Women's Volleyball team rallied after dropping the fourth set to score a 15-10 win in the fifth for the 3-2 win over Russell Sage Saturday in an Empire 8 matchup.
Nazareth (7-13 overall, 3-2 Empire 8) dropped the opening set 25-23 but came back to win the next two sets 25-15 and 25-14 to take the 2-1 lead. Sage (6-14, 1-5 E8) answered with a 25-18 win in the fourth set to force the fifth set tie breaker.
The Golden Flyers jumped out to a 10-5 lead but the Gators scored three straight points to close the gap prompting a Nazareth time out. Coming out of the break, Nazareth scored three straight points with a service error, a kill by junior Ruth Jackson and a service ace by senior Catie Spegar to give Nazareth a 13-8 edge. Sophomore Leah Fusilli provided a pair of kills down the stretch to clinch the victory.
Junior Tessa Grover had another solid all-around performance with her seventh triple-double of the season as she totaled 10 kills, 16 assists and 16 digs. Fusilli added 10 digs. Junior Ella Kules had 10 digs and led the team with 20 assists. Sophomore Rylie Loomis had double-digit kills with 11.
The Golden Flyers are off until Saturday and an Empire 8 match with Houghton.
