ROCHESTER, NY – Freshman Mackenzie Halliday stopped 24 shots Wednesday night for the Nazareth Field Hockey team and fellow freshman Hailey Dimao scored in the first quarter but Brockport answered with a pair of fourth quarter goals to escape with a 2-1 non-conference win.
Nazareth (0-4) took the early lead as senior Caroline Desautels lined up a penalty corner and took a return pass before sending the ball in front of the goal to Dimao who fired a shot past the Brockport (3-0) goalie for the 1-0 lead with 7:10 left to play in the opening period.
The game remained 1-0 for the next 40+ minutes before Brockport knotted the score with a goal off a penalty corner with just less than seven minutes left to play.
The Golden Eagles maintained the offensive pressure and scored again two minutes later to take a 2-1 lead.
Nazareth had a couple late chances but could not score the equalizer.
Brockport controlled the play for a majority of the second half with a 12-0 shots advantage in the third period and an 8-2 edge in the final quarter. Halliday finished with an impressive 24 saves including 10 in the third period and six in the fourth.
Nazareth also had defensive saves by sophomore Lydia Coombs, Desaultes and freshman Audra Mieczkowski.
The Golden Flyers will play again Saturday with a second consecutive home game at 1 p.m. against Skidmore.
