Sarah Merriwether Scores in Empire 8 Tie

KEUKA PARK, NY – Senior Sarah Merriwether's first goal of the season gave the Nazareth Women's Soccer team an early 1-0 lead but Keuka College scored a second half goal to salvage a 1-1 tie Saturday afternoon.

Nazareth (1-2-4 overall 0-0-1 Empire 8) struck early as Merriwether scored in the fourth minute to give the Golden Flyers the early lead. Keuka (2-2-4, 0-0-2 Empire 8) tied the game midway through the second half.

Nazareth struck first at the 3:27 mark, when a swarm of Golden Flyers caused a Keuka turnover in its own end and Merriwether found the back of the net after settling a cross from freshman Haley Dennison.

The Golden Flyers put the pressure on Keuka late in the second half with a couple of scoring opportunities including a shot on net by sophomore Haley Glassman. With less than eight minutes to go in the opening half, she outmuscled a Keuka defender for a loose ball in the box before the Wolves goalie made a diving save.

The Wolves evened the score at 1-1 at the 61:58 mark after a through ball split multiple Golden Flyer defenders. Nazareth's sophomore goalkeeper Annika Monfort denied a great scoring opportunity for Keuka to take the lead with less than 22-minutes to play to help preserve the 1-1 tie.

Nazareth outpaced the Wolves 9-3 in shots on net. The three shots given up by the Golden Flyers were a season-low.

RIT will travel to Golden Flyer Stadium for a non-conference game on Tuesday as Nazareth makes a short return to non-conference play.
