Pawlika; Smyth Power Naz Past Alfred State, 5-1

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Jake Pawlika and Sam Smyth each tallied a goal and two assists to help Nazareth defeat visiting Alfred State 5-1 on Tuesday night under the lights on the Artificial Turf. The Golden Flyers extend their win streak to three games, improving to 5-2 overall, while the Pioneers fall to 3-2-2 overall.

Despite mustering just four shots in the opening half, the Golden Flyers made good on two of them.

Pawlika received the pass from Smyth, took two touches, and fired it into the far post for his fourth goal of the season in the 28th minute.

Two minutes later, Bamford played a beautiful give and go with Pawlika, which ended with Bamford's second goal of the season. It was Pawlika's sixth assist on the year.

Logan Menna kept the Pioneers at 0, as Gavin Rice for Alfred State caught Nazareth's keeper leaning the opposite way but he was able to get one hand on it for the save. He made four of his six saves in the first.

It was 2-0 at the half.

In the second, Pawlika assisted on his second of the day, leading Smyth for a one-time shot to push the hosts lead to 3-0.

Alfred State was able to eventually find the back of the net as they were awarded a penalty kick. Menna saved the initial shot by Nuri Sarbudak, but the sophomore was able to cash in on the rebound in the 65th minute.

Nazareth made it 4-1 in the 69th minute, converting a corner kick opportunity. After the Pioneers headed the initial service away, Michael Yates headed the ball down to his right foot and blasted it into the net from 22-yards out for his first collegiate goal.

Smyth picked up his second assist of the day in the 78th minute, finding Cuneyt Vardar on a cross from the left flank for a one-time finish. He now has 11 goals and has scored in three-straight games.

Nazareth returns to the pitch on Saturday, traveling to Houghton for a 1 p.m. contest.
