Sizer sisters, Zach Stengelin win Van Gundy awards

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Men's basketball standout Zach Stenglein and women's basketball twin sisters Makalah and Miyah Sizer are the 2022 recipients of the Jeff Van Gundy Award that was presented earlier this week at the Nazareth athletic department's senior awards luncheon.

Stenglein, of Rochester, N.Y., has been a four-year standout as a point guard for the Golden Flyers, helping Nazareth to 71 victories, including 20-win campaigns in 2019-20 and 2021-22. The 2021-22 season was especially prosperous as Stenglein became the 28th Nazareth player to reach 1,000 points in career scoring. He also ranks among Nazareth's all-time leaders in steals (156) and three-point baskets. Nazareteh set a school record in 2021-22 with 24 wins and an in-season 17-game winning streak. Nazareth also hosted the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament. He is a three-time E8 Conference all-star. An Accounting and Finance major, Stenglein plans to exercise his extra season of eligibility for the 2022-23 season.

The Sizer sisters also are from Rochester, N.Y. and were four-year members of the women's basketball team. They helped the Golden Flyers to 61 wins as well as Nazareth's first-ever Empire 8 Conference title in 2021.

Makalah Sizer appeared in 77 games over the course of her career and totaled 160 points. Miyah Sizer played in 90 games, including 27 as a starter in 2021-22 and produced 505 points and 64 three-point baskets. Makalah and Miyah both are Business Management majors who have made regular appearances on the Empire 8 Presidents' List for student-athletes with GPAs of 3.75 and above.

Criteria for the annual Jeff Van Gundy award include great work ethic and understanding of team concepts in and out of season. Leadership and pride in Nazareth athletics are other criteria. Van Gundy, who formerly coached the New York Knicks and Houston Rockets in the NBA, now resides in Houston and serves as a game analyst for ABC and ESPN for NBA broadcasts.
