Win Streak Snapped with Losses to Geneseo

ROCHESTER, NY – Senior Sarah Simmons had three of the six Nazareth hits in the second game of the doubleheader and sophomore Marissa Berghorn totaled three hits with a double and two runs batted in on the day to lead the Golden Flyers in a pair of non-conference games against SUNY Geneseo.

The Knights (14-2) posted a 3-1 win in the opener and then rallied late for a 12-2 win in the nightcap to sweep the doubleheader. The losses snapped a five-game win streak for Nazareth (8-8) that started with the last game of the Florida trip.

In the opener, Geneseo scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning and looked to take a 2-0 lead through the first before Nazareth added a run in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead in half.

Junior Justine Brooks walked to start the bottom of the first and took second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Cassidy Hoffmier. Brooks advanced to third on a wild pitch.

With one away, Simmons popped up to second base and a quick throw to third looked to catch Brooks in a double play but the Golden Flyers challenged the call and Brooks was called safe on the play after the umpires consulted.

Berghorn stepped to the plate and delivered an infield single to shortstop to allow Brooks to score.

The score remained the same until the seventh inning when the Knights added an insurance run for the final score.

Berghorn and freshman Maggie Burdick each had a pair of hits.

Game two started scoreless until Geneseo scored a single run in the third and then extended the lead to 3-0 with two more runs in the fourth.

With two outs in the fifth inning, Geneseo had a close play at second base called in their favor which extended the inning and the Knights rallied for five runs in the inning to take a commanding 8-0 lead.

Nazareth snapped the shutout with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to trim the lead.

Bennett opened the inning as she reached on a fielding error and moved to scoring position on a wild pitch. Junior Emily Daciw singled to put runners on the corners and Brooks reached on a fielder's choice play that allowed Bennett to score.

Simmons hit a two out single and Berghorn followed with a run-scoring single to cut the lead to 8-2.

Geneseo scored a run in the sixth and added three more in the seventh on the strength of two home runs.

Nazareth will return to Empire 8 play Friday with a pair of games at home against Houghton.
