Balanced Attack Downs Volleyball in Regular Season Finale

ROCHESTER, NY – Graduate student Antonio Sargent had 11 kills including his 1,000th career kill and sophomore Owen Wickens added 18 kills but the Nazareth College Men's Volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to New Paltz Saturday in a United Volleyball Conference (UVC) match at Kidera Gymnasium.

New Paltz (19-5 overall, 7-0 UVC) completed the undefeated conference season and secure the top seed in the upcoming UVC Tournament with a balanced attack as four different players recorded double-digit kills for the Hawks.

Nazareth (18-8, 3-4 UVC) won the opening set 25-21 but New Paltz rallied to take the second set 25-22, posted a 25-21 win in the third set and closed out the match with a close 25-23 win in the fourth set.

In the fourth set, Sargent took a quick pass from Wickens and recorded a kill down the middle of the New Paltz defense to give Nazareth an 8-4 lead. The kills was the ninth of the day for Sargent and his 1,000th career kill.

He becomes the seventh player in Nazareth history to eclipse the milestone.

Wickens finished with a team-leading 18 kills and a .375 attack percentage and also added six aces and 11 digs. Junior Trent Caviness handed out 31 assists.

Nazareth finishes the regular season tied for fourth place in the conference standings but loses a tie-breaker with NYU for the No. 4 seed and will face NYU as the No. 5 seed at 5 p.m. Friday in the quarterfinal round of the tournament. The winner will face top-seeded New Paltz at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The other quarterfinal features No. 3 Vassar against No. 6 Elmira at 7:30 p.m. Friday with the winner facing No. 2 St. John Fisher at 5 p.m. Saturday.

The championship match is scheduled for Sunday.
