UTICA, NY – Senior Abbey Luth and junior Ally Watrous each scored twice to lead the Nazareth College Women's Hockey team to a convincing 5-1 victory over Utica College Saturday to complete an undefeated conference season.
The Golden Flyers (24-1 overall, 20-0 UCHC), ranked No. 7 in the latest UCSHO.com national poll, broke the scoreless game near the end of the first period as Watrous fired a shot from the point at the start of a second consecutive power play opportunity to give Nazareth the early lead.
At the start of the second period, Luth scored to extend the lead. Off the opening face-off, Nazareth moved into the offensive zone and senior Nikolle Van Stralen fired a shot from the blue line that was saved but Luth was there to collect the rebound and knock in the goal. The goal was her 100th career point as the senior recorded 31 points as a freshman at William Smith and then transferred to Nazareth and added 69 points to her career total.
With just 40 seconds left in the second period sophomore Julia Holmes netted the third short-handed goal of the weekend for Nazareth as senior Keeley Rose fed Holmes for the 3-0 Nazareth lead.
Utica (20-5, 17-3 UCHC) scored its lone goal midway through the third period but 1:11 later, Luth scored her second goal of the game with a pass from fellow senior Madison Nichols to regain the three-goal advantage for Nazareth.
With five minutes remaining, Watrous scored her second goal of the contest with an unassisted goal to cap the scoring.
Senior Adrianna Brehm made 23 saves to record her 13th win of the season and 46th win of her career.
Nazareth will host either Alvernia or Lebanon Valley Wednesday in the quarterfinal round of the UCHC Tournament.
