Box Score UTICA, NY – The Nazareth Men's Soccer team had several scoring chances but could not find the back of the net as the Golden Flyers dropped a 1-0 decision to Utica University Tuesday in a quarterfinal game of the Empire 8 Tournament.
Nazareth (7-5-5) held a 19-11 advantage in shots and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks but it was a goal early in the second half by Utica (8-8-1) that was the difference.
In the opening minutes of the second half, the Pioneers controlled the ball and sent a crossing pass to the top of the box and the Utica player made a quick spin move to free up some space and sent a low shot into the corner of the goal.
The Golden Flyers had a good scoring chance with a free kick from 30 yards out but a blast from the foot of senior Andrew Vogler sailed high and over the goal.
With just three minutes remaining, Nazareth took advantage of a turnover in the midfield area and sent a quick pass into the box but the ball was just out of the reach of junior Cooper LaValley as he was sent to the turf after colliding with the Utica Goalie.
Utica advances in the tournament and will face St. John Fisher in the semifinal round Thursday night.
