ROCHESTER, NY – Senior Grace Wasileski scored one goal and assisted on another for the Nazareth Field Hockey team Sunday but the Golden Flyers dropped a 4-2 decision to SUNY Oneonta in a non-conference battle on the Artificial Turf Field.
Oneonta (5-5) opened the scoring 10:35 into the contest on a goal with a scramble in front of the Nazareth (2-11) cage. A Red Dragon goal early in the second quarter extended the lead to 2-0.
Midway through the second period, Wasileski fired a hard shot from 25 yards out that deflected off an Oneonta defender's stick and into the back of the net to cut the lead in half.
Oneonta added a goal late in the first half on a penalty shot to take a 3-1 edge into the halftime intermission.
Just less than five minutes into the fourth quarter, the Red Dragons scored again after a gree card was assessed to Nazareth to take a 4-1 advantage.
With less than 10 minutes remaining in the game, freshman Avery Tanton redirected a pass from Wasileski into the back of the net to trim the lead. The play started with a penalty corner that came out to the top of the circle to Wasileski who fired a pass to Tanton on the corner of the goal and the freshman tipped the ball into the goal to cut the lead to 4-2.
Nazareth was unable to trim the lead further and dropped the non-conference game.
Freshman goalie Mackenzie Halliday made 12 saves as Nazareth was outshot 24-7.
The Golden Flyers return to action Tuesday with another non-conference game as SUNY Oswego visits Nazareth for a 5 p.m. contest.
