Women’s Soccer Remains in First Place with Road Tie

ROCHESTER, NY – Freshman Tatum Overton sent a long shot off the fingertips of the St. John Fisher goalie and into the far corner of the goal with 20 minutes remaining to tie the game at 1-1 and the Nazareth Women's Soccer team managed a road tie to remain in sole possession of first place in the Empire 8 standings.

St. John Fisher (6-2-5 overall, 4-0-2 Empire 8) scored first with a goal off a short pass in the box and a quick shot near the end of the first half.

The goal put Nazareth (5-2-7, 4-0-3 Empire 8) behind for the first time in seven games but the Golden Flyers continued to pressure the Cardinals defense with several shots from outside the 18-yard box.

Overton took control of a loose ball near the sideline off a throw-in and sent a long shot toward the goal. The shot forced the St. John Fisher goalie to retreat toward the goal as she tried to redirect the ball with outstretched arms.

The ball tipped off the fingers of the goalie and into the back of the goal for the game-tying goal.

Over the final 20 minutes, the Nazareth defense limited the Cardinals to just three shots and sophomore goalie Annika Monfort was able to stop all three to keep the game tied.

Nazareth had three shots down the stretch as well and also had a scoring chance with a late corner kick before the game ended with the 1-1 tie.

Nazareth entered the game in first place with 14 points on four win and two ties while St. John Fisher was a point behind in second place. Each team earned a point with the tie as the Golden Flyers remained at the top of the standings.

Nazareth continues Empire 8 play Saturday at Hartwick before finishing the regular season with home games against Brockport (Oct. 26) and Alfred (Oct. 29).
