BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Nazareth field hockey team had their highest goal output of the season on Tuesday, scoring five goals in a 5-0 victory over Medaille University. Senior
Caroline Desautels added a pair of goals and classmate
Grace Wasileski added a goal and an assist in the victory.
It was an important win for the Golden Flyers (3-13 overall, 3-4 E8), moving them into seventh place in the Empire 8 standings, ahead of Medaille (3-10, 2-4 E8). The top 6 teams after the regular season earn a berth to the Empire 8 Field Hockey Championships so the Golden Flyers will need to continue to make up ground in the standings in their final two conference games. Nazareth's next contest is on Saturday, when it will host Elmira (0-11 overall, 0-6 E8) for Senior Day. The Golden Flyers finish the season against Keuka College (4-10 overall, 3-4 E8).
Wasileski opened up the scoring for Nazareth just under the five minute mark in the opening quarter, pushing her season total to four.
Desautels chipped in a goal on the backside 18:48 into the contest off an assist from
Bailey Selman to make it 2-0.
The Golden Flyers struck two more times before half, scoring just :51 seconds apart. Freshman
Avery Tanton scored her fourth of the season on an unassisted goal at the 28:33 mark. Shortly after, Desautels notched her second of the game behind an assist from Wasileski. Tanton, Desautels, and Wasileski are all tied for the team lead with four goals this season.
After a scoreless third quarter, sophomore Lyida Coombs scored her second-career goal, first this season, with under five minutes to play to close out the scoring.
Nazareth held a large edge in shots with 32 to Medaille's two.
Madilyn Satter earned her first-career win in net, making one save.
