Men's Soccer Battles Medaille to 3-3 Draw

 ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Visiting Medaille scored a late goal in the 82nd minute to help earn a 3-3 draw with Nazareth on Saturday at Golden Flyer stadium in a pivotal conference match. It was the lone goal of the second half as the other five came in the first frame. Graduate student Sam Smyth scored two goals for Nazareth to up his season total to seven.
 
Nazareth moves to 7-3-3 overall and 2-1-3 in conference play, while the Mavericks remain unbeaten overall at 7-0-6 and 2-0-3 in conference play.
 
Nazareth didn't take long to strike, scoring less than a minute in, as Smyth head home a cross from Sam Romanosky just outside the six yard box.
 
Medaille evened the score in the 14th minute on Ander Castillo's first goal of the game. He snuck behind the defense and toed the ball past goalkeeper Patrick Larkin.
 
Smyth answered for his second of the day less than two minutes later off an assist from Quentin Herrmann. Hermann took a long free kick behind midfield and Smyth one-timed a right footed shot out of the air from 12-yards out over the keeper.
 
Nazareth improved its lead to 3-1 in the 34th minute as Drew Decker played a through ball to Noah Malta for a one-time finish.
 
The Mavericks were able to claw to within 3-2 with under a minute to play in the half with Castillo scoring from in close.
 
In the 82nd minute, Castillo cashed in on a hat trick, soaring high for a header goal off a corner kick. The sophomore leads the conference and is among the leaders in the nation in goals with 17 on the season.
 
Larkin made 10 saves in his second career start. The Golden Flyers held a 19-18 edge in shots for the game.
 
Nazareth returns to action on Wednesday, hosting Keuka College at 4 p.m.
