ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Playing up a man for 61 minutes, Nazareth was unable to find the back of the net behind 29 shots, falling 1-0 to Keuka College on Wednesday at a rainy Golden Flyer Stadium. Keuka goalkeeper Carson Smith stood on his head for the visitors, making countless highlight saves. He totaled 15 saves in all.
With the loss, Nazareth drops to 7-4-3 overall and 2-2-3 in conference play, while Keuka moves to 2-8-2 and 1-4-2 in the Empire 8.
Nazareth was on its way to scoring the first goal of the game in the 29
th minute as
Matt Bamford headed a corner kick, only to have Keuka's Griffin Heron deny the goal with his hand.
Herron was issued a red card and the Wolves were forced to play down a man for the final 61 minutes. As a result of the red card, the Golden Flyers were awarded a penalty kick which
Cuneyt Vardar was unable to convert. The graduate student slowed his momentum just before striking the ball down the middle which Smith was able to turn aside.
Five minutes after the red card was issued, Keuka was opportunistic off a corner kick. Thomas Callery headed the cross home with the assist being credited to Brenden Moquin. The visitors were able to protect that one-goal lead the rest of the game.
Nazareth had six corner kicks in the opening half and held a 9-3 shot advantage.
In the second half, Bamford nearly struck again on a corner kick in the 51
st minute on a header, but Smith made a strong save to keep the blank slate.
Smith had to make a pair of impressive saves off a corner kick sequence for the Golden Flyers in the 72
nd minute.
Sam Smyth drove an original shot that was saved and Sam Romansky tried putting home a rebound that was turned aside once again.
Shortly after Vardar blasted a shot that nearly made it into the net from inside the 18-yard box, but Smith was up for the task.
Vardar had another sequence in the 87
th minute, where he had two consecutive shots blocked by defenders and then a shot the hit the post before Smith was able to keep it out of the net.
In all, Nazareth had two shots hit the post in the final 10 minutes, but the Nazareth could not break through.
The Golden Flyers return to action on Saturday, traveling to Elmira for a 3 p.m. contest.
