ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Visiting Stevenson scored the game-winning goal with 52 seconds left in the third period Sunday as the Mustangs defeated Nazareth in a evenly played men's hockey game, 3-2, at the Bill Gray's Regional Iceplex.
Nazareth dropped to 7-11-2 overall and 6-6-1 in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference following the weekend split of home games. Nazareth defeated Chatham on Saturday, 5-2. Stevenson also split its two weekend games and stands at 10-5-1 overall and 6-3-0 in conference games.
Sunday's game appeared to be ticketed for overtime after
Cole Moore scored for Nazareth at 7:17 of the third period to tie the score at 2-2. He blasted a slap shot from the blue line for his seventh goal of the season after receiving a pass from
Nick Charron.
After that, Nazareth successfully killed off a Stevenson power play chance. With less than a minute remaining, the Mustangs' Alex Rivet one-timed a pass from Ryan Patrick to send a shot past Nazareth goaltender
Matt Sayles for his second goal of the game and sixth of the season.
Nazareth sent out an extra skater for the final 30 seconds, but was unable to generate a quality scoring chance before the final horn sounded.
Stevenson took a 1-0 lead with a goal midway through the first period, but Nazareth tied it at 4:25 of the second on a goal that was credited to
JT Entelisano after scramble in front of Mustangs' goaltender Ryan Kenny.
Johnny Jackson gained credit for the assist. Rivet untied the score about eight minutes later for a 2-1 Stevenson lead heading into the third period.
Nazareth finished with a 31-24 edge in shots on goal with Sayles totaling 21 saves and Kenny 29.
Nazareth returns to action Saturday at Utica at 2 p.m.
