ROCHESTER, NY – Senior Hailey Redders scored a goal and added an assist to lead the Nazareth College Women's Hockey team to a second consecutive 3-2 victory over Manhattanville Saturday afternoon in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) game at the Bill Gray's Iceplex.
The victory Saturday may not have had a dramatic ending like Friday's win that was decided with less than 30 seconds left in the contest but the victory for No. 7 Nazareth (18-1-0, 14-0-0 UCHC) was just as sweet.
Senior Elie Fallieras opened the scoring with 4:53 left in the first period and she finished a play started by Redders to give the Golden Flyers a first period lead.
The lead did not last long as Manhattanville (10-7-1, 10-4-0 UCHC) knotted the score just 36 seconds later after a turnover in the neutral zone gave the Valiants a good scoring opportunity.
Manhattanville extended the lead with less than 10 seconds remaining in the opening period and took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
In the second period, Redders tied the score late in the period after her first shot was saved, she intercepted the clearing attempt and slipped a shot under the goalie pads for the 2-2 score with 6:06 left in the period.
Less than three minutes later, Nazareth took the decisive lead as senior Madison Nichols stole a clearing pass at the blue line and skated in the fellow senior Abbey Luth before sending a perfect pass across to Luth who sent a one-timer past the Valiants goalie for the 3-2 lead with 3:19 left in the second period.
Neither team scored in the final period and the Nazareth defense stood strong in the closing seconds after Manhattanville pulled its goalie for the extra attacker.
Nazareth will host King's next weekend in the final home series of the regular season with senior day celebrations scheduled for Saturday.
