ROCHESTER, NY -- Freshman Dominic Marino headed in a shot in the final minute of play Sunday night as the Nazareth College Men's Soccer team avoided a shutout loss and dropped a 3-1 decision to RIT in the final game of the annual Doug May Memorial Tournament at RIT.
There were a pair of ties in the first round of play as Brockport and Nazareth played to a scoreless tie and RIT and Mount Aloysius had a 2-2 tie in the Saturday games. Brockport defeated Mount Aloysuis 2-0 early Sunday.
The Tigers (2-0-1) scored twice in the first half and played aggressive defense that prevented Nazareth (1-1-1) from having many scoring opportunities. The best chance in the opening half for Nazareth came as senior Dante Walters picked up a loose ball at the top of the 18-yard box and fired a hard low shot that went just wide of the goal.
In the second half, the Tigers extended the lead to 3-0 with 21 minutes to play.
Nazareth used a late rush up the field to score its only goal. The original shot from the Golden Flyers was saved and deflected to the side before Marino was able to head the ball into the open side of the goal with 39 seconds left on the clock.
The Golden Flyers return home and will face SUNY Poly at 6 p.m. Wednesday and Pitt-Bradford at 12 p.m. Saturday.
