ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth had statistical advantages in shots and corner kicks Wednesday at home against Geneseo, but the Knights had the edge where it counted most -- on the scoreboard with a 2-1 women's soccer victory over the Golden Flyers in non-conference action.
The Golden Flyers left the Wednesday pitch still in search of their first win of the season as they dropped to 0-3-2 overall. Geneseo scored once in each half and improved to 4-1 overall.
With goals extremely difficult to come by, Nazareth put its best foot forward Wednesday in generating 17 shots to Geneseo's 10. Nazareth also had six corner kicks to one for the Knights.
Geneseo took advantage of its chances with the first coming at the 35-minute mark of the first half as Lindsay Matthews sent a perfect pass through the midfield and onto the foot of Juliette Frischmann, who took a few dribbles before burying a shot past Nazareth keeper
Annika Monfort. That came several minutes after Nazareth's best scoring chance was thwarted by Geneseo goalie Angel Bennett, who stopped a point-blank attempt by
Alexandra Skoda in the 26th minute.
Geneseo built an insurmountable advantage less than three minutes into the second half as Lindsay Wright was able to one-touch a shot past Monfort after a cross by Nicole Bell.
Nazareth finally got on the scoreboard in the 73rd minute when Skoda redirected a corner kick that developed from the foot of
Caleigh Cahoon. Skoda's first goal of the season ended a Nazareth scoring drought that lasted nearly 300 minutes and spanned parts of four games.
The Golden Flyers had a couple more scoring chances later, but shots by Cahoon and
Mallory Ott were saved by Bennett.
Nazareth returns to action Saturday for another non-conference game at Ithaca at 12 p.m.
