Golden Flyers finish season 6-3 overall

PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Top-seeded St. John Fisher outscored Nazareth in four sets to take the Empire 8 Conference title in women's volleyball Sunday. Scores were 25-18, 19-25, 25-19, 25-18.

The Cardinals completed the makeshift 2021 season unbeaten at 9-0 overall, while the Golden Flyers finished at 6-3.

The Golden Flyers got a match-high 13 kills from sophomore Kaylee Kelly and 11 more from junior McKenzie Hart, but the Golden Flyers had 26 hitting errors and 19 service errors that assisted in their undoing.

Eight of Nazareth's service errors came in the opening set and helped Fisher take an early advantage. The Golden Flyers had their best hitting percentage in the second set (12-5-33, .212) as they rallied to square the match. Hart and Kelly each recorded four of their kills.

Fisher banged out 12 kills to take the third set and was efficient in the fourth set with nine more kills and no hitting errors to take the title for the second year in a row.

Junior Olivia Quick added eight kills for the Golden Flyers and freshman setter Kelly Taylor combined 29 assists with 10 digs. Sophomore Kelsey Ludwig had 21 digs and Hart had 17.

Alea Steigerwald and Delayne Young each had eight kills for the Cardinals.
