Walters' two goals lift Nazareth past Utica, 2-1

Golden Flyers (3-2 overall) host Utica again Wednesday in E8 playoffs

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Junior Dante Walters scored both goals for Nazareth Sunday, including the game-winner with less than three minutes left in the second half, as Nazareth overcame visiting Utica for a 2-1 men's soccer victory.

The win, through a steady rain on Nazareth's artificial turf field, came in the Golden Flyers' final regular-season game and improved their record to 3-2 -- both overall and in conference play. Utica dropped to 1-5 overall and 1-4 in Empire 8 games. The fallout from Sunday's result is that the two teams will meet again Wednesday at Nazareth in a first-round playoff game of the Empire 8 Conference Tournament. Game time to be determined.

With Nazareth clinging to a 1-0 lead late in the second half Sunday, Utica was able to tie the score on a goal by Sory Konate in the 87th minute. With overtime looming as a distinct possibility, Walters was able to untie the score just 48 seconds later as he slipped up the right wing and accepted a perfect pass from Cooper LaValley. Walters took a couple of dribbles and sent a low shot underneath Utica keeper Randy Miksch, who had left his mark to cut down the angle.

Utica put pressure on in the closing minutes, but Nazareth was able to prevail with freshman goalkeeper Trevor Clark being credited with 10 saves.

Walters had given Nazareth a 1-0 in the 39th minute after a long throw in by Jon Herrick. Walters was able to settle the ball and one-touched a shot past Miksch for his first goal of the season.

Utica had a 16-11 edge in shots and corner kicks were even at five apiece. Miksch finished with four saves for the Pioneers.
