ROCHESTER, NY – St. John Fisher scored the only goal of the game in the second half as the Cardinals won a 1-0 decision over the Nazareth College Men's Soccer team Friday in the semifinal round of the Empire 8 Tournament at Growney Stadium.
The Cardinals (5-1) will face Russell Sage in the Empire 8 Championship game Sunday after the Gators scored a 1-0 win over Houghton.
After a scoreless first half that saw St. John Fisher outshoot Nazareth (2-3) by a 6-1 margin and had a pair of great scoring chances.
With 12 minutes left in the first half, the Cardinals had a long shot that freshman goalie Trevor Clark made a diving save to stop. The rebound was left a couple yards to the right of Clark and a point-blank shot was also stopped by Clark.
Late in the half, Fisher was awarded a corner kick and after a header knocked the ball back to the middle of the box, the one-timer shot from the Cardinals was stopped by senior defender Justin Pumputis.
In the second half, St. John Fisher sent a long pass toward the Nazareth goal and Clark came off his line 20 yards to attempt to clear the ball. Clark slipped and the Cardinals made a couple quick passes into the box for the shot into the empty side of the goal for the lone score in the game.
Fisher finished with a 10-6 shots edge including a 4-0 lead in shots on goal. The Cardinals also had a 4-1 edge in corner kicks and each team picked up three yellow cards.
