Nazareth blanks Houghton in women's soccer, 4-0

Golden Flyers (2-0) visit Utica Sunday at 1 p.m.

HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Senior Kristen Prohaska scored twice and junior goalkeeper Gabrielle Pighetti recorded her first complete shutout Wednesday as visiting Nazareth defeated Houghton in Empire 8 women's soccer action, 4-0.

The victory was Nazareth's second of an abbreviated spring season that will include a conference playoff at the end. Nazareth also dominated Elmira last Sunday in a 9-0 season-opening win. Prohaska, who missed all of the 2019 season with a foot injury, also scored in the Elmira game as she is making the most of her long-awaited return to action.

The Golden Flyers outshot Houghton 11-3 in the first half Prohaska delivered less than four minutes into the game with the only goal that was necessary. She worked her way past a Houghton defender and blasted a left-footed shot from about 25 yards away and over the outstretched hands of Highlanders' keeper Megan Merrifield.

Early in the second half, Ashley Plane scored following a scramble in front of the goal. An initial shot by McKayla Hughes was saved by Merrifield, but Plane was opportunistic to tap in the rebound.

About three minutes after that, Prohaska scored her second goal of the game off her own rebound following a Merrifield save. The scoring opportunity was set up by a pass up the right wing by Caleigh Cahoon.

Nazareth fourth goal came from the foot of sophomore Geena Morotti, who completed her first career tally on a long lofted shot from the left side following a Houghton goal kick. The shot was perfectly placed into the upper right corner as Merrifield's futile attempt to make a save resulted in a deflection under the crossbar.

Pighetti was credited with one save in recording her first career shutout. Nazareth plays again Sunday at Utica at 1 p.m.
