UR dominates Nazareth in women's lacrosse, 11-3

Nazareth (1-2 overall) visits RIT Saturday at 12 p.m.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The visitors from the University of Rochester scored three times in the final four minutes of first-half action and then dominated play in the second half Wednesday as the Yellowjackets defeated Nazareth in a non-conference game for women's lacrosse, 11-3, at Nazareth's artificial turf field.

UR improved to 2-0 with the victory while Nazareth dropped to 0-2. The Golden Flyers visit RIT Saturday for another non-conference game against the Tigers at 12 p.m.

Nazareth had difficulty all day in penetrating Rochester's stingy defense as the Golden Flyers managed only 17 shots, only 12 of which were directed on goal. Emma Robinson, Emily Paddock and Regan McGwin were the Nazareth goal scorers. Clare Heffernan scored three times for the Yellowjackets, while Lucy Haggerty added two goals and three assists. Mary Panepento and Emily Voss each had two goals and one assist.

Heffernan scored just over a minute into the game, but Nazareth tied it at 18:05 on an unassisted score by Robinson. The score remained stalemated at 1-1 until 4:02 remained in the half and Voss scored on a free-position shot and the Yellowjackerts were ahead the rest of the way. Goals by Grace Crochiere and Haggerty closed the half with the Yellowjackets on top 4-1.

The second half opened with the Yellowjackets extending their scoring string to six goals as Panepento, Haggerty and Heffernan each tallied to extend the lead to 7-1. A goal by Paddock interrupted the string, but UR added three more goals before McGwin scored her first goal of the season to close out the Nazareth scoring.

UR effectively stymied Nazareth's high-scoring sophomore Emma States, who was held scoreless after delivering nine goals in the first two games. She was able to generate eight shots and misfired on a first-half free-position attempt. Kate Lawrence played all 60 minutes in goal and had nine saves. Vicki Arena had five draw controls.
