Women's soccer returns to play with 9-0 win over Elmira

Golden Flyers visit Houghton Wednesday at 4 p.m.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Senior Caleigh Cahoon scored two goals and added two assists Sunday as host Nazareth made a successful return to the women's soccer pitch with a one-sided 9-0 win over Elmira.

Sunday's game marked the first intercollegiate action for the Golden Flyers in 494 days in women's soccer. They had a few intra-squad scrimmages in the fall, but the last real action took place Nov. 6, 2019.

Nazareth dominated Sunday's game with a 27-3 edge in shots. The Golden Flyers scored seven times in the first half and weren't seriously challenged thereafter.

Amanda Rice scored Nazareth's first goal following a through pass from sophomore McKayla Hughes. That came before the game was 10 minutes old. Hughes scored herself about two minutes later when she knocked in a crossing pass from Cahoon.

Senior Lauren Begy assisted on Nazareth's third goal as she made a run up the right wing and centered a pass that Cahoon converted for her first goal of the game.

Unassisted tallies by Kristen Prohaska and Mia Longo followed less than two minutes apart to extend Nazareth's lead to 5-0.

Sophomore Madison Knowles also had a goal and an assist before the first half ended. She assisted on a goal by Madison Clermont in the 37th minutes and then scored unassisted six minutes later to give Nazareth a commanding 7-0 lead at the break.

Cahoon's second goal came about 10 minutes into the second half as she headed in a crossing pass from Olivia Veintimilla. Alexandra Skoda scored Nazareth's ninth goal when she blasted past a diving Elmira goalkeeper, Cassidy Buchman, who made 10 saves.

Nazareth used three keepers, none of whom had a busy time. Junior Gabrielle Pighetti started and played into the second half and was credited with one save. Freshman Lauren Bendall and sophomore Julia Hollandsworth also saw second-half action.

The Golden Flyers, playing an eight-game spring schedule, take to the road for their next game Wednesday at Houghton at 5 p.m.
