ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore Emma States scored three times and junior Emma Robinson added a pair of goals for the Nazareth College Women's Lacrosse team but a late goal by St. John Fisher gave the Cardinals, ranked #13 in the latest national poll, a slim 7-5 victory Wednesday night at Growney Stadium.
St. John Fisher (1-0) scored four of the first five goals of the game to take a lead in the first 20 minutes of action. States scored her first goal of the game in the middle of the Cardinal run and was assisted by senior Callahan Lyon.
Robinson scored her first goal of the game with 4:55 left in the first half to cut the lead in half and St. John Fisher took a 4-2 lead into the break.
The Cardinals scored first in the second half 2:17 into the stanza.
States answered with her second of the contest less than three minutes later to cut the lead to 5-3.
After the Cardinals scored to stretch the lead to 6-3, States added her third goal of the game and Robinson scored her second in a span of less than three minutes to make it a 6-5 game with 16:41 left to play.
St. John Fisher regained the two-goal advantage at the 9:25 mark but Nazareth was unable to score down the stretch to narrow the lead.
Senior Tori Blazey and junior Lauren Caldwell added assists for Nazareth and junior Katie Lawrence made five saves in the Golden Flyers goal.
Nazareth will face Utica College Saturday at 1 p.m. in its home opener.
