Nazareth blanked by Wilkes, 7-0

Golden Flyerrs (2-6-1 overall) back home Sunday against King's at 5 p.m.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. -- Visiting Nazareth yielded four first-period goals against nationally ranked Wilkes Thursday as the Colonels blanked the Golden Flyers in men's hockey, 7-0, in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) action.

The loss dropped Nazareth to 2-6-1 overall, while Wilkes, ranked 11th in the most recent Division III poll by USCHO.com, remained unbeaten at 9-0.

Shots on goal were 35-31 in favor of Wilkes, but the Colonels capitalized three times on the power play, including their first goal of the game at 4:11 of the opening frame. Nazareth's Nick Charron was whistled for slashing at 3:04 and Wilkes' Tyler Barrow scored during the two-minute extra-man advantage.

Wilkes' Joseph Johnson scored twice before the first period expired and Phil Erickson also scored to give the Colonels a commanding advantage through 20 minutes. Wilkes scored two more goals in the second period and another in the third with two of those coming with a man advantage. Wilkes went 3-for-5 in the game with the extra skater.

Nazareth had four power play chances of its own but failed to capitalize as the Golden Flyers generated only four shots.

Freshman David Reduzzi started in goal for Nazareth and had 19 saves before being relieved in the second period by Gage Roberts, who had nine saves with one goal allowed.

Michael Houlihan generated five of Nazareth's 31 shots on goal and Carmine Alberga had four. Michael Paterson-Jones played the first two periods in goal for Wilkes and had 21 saves. Nico Pidro had 10 more saves in the third period.

Nazareth is back home Sunday for a United Collegiate Hockey Conference game against King's at 5 p.m. at the Bill Gray's Iceplex.
