ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Nazareth used a pair of first-period goals Saturday to defeat visiting Amherst, 3-1, for a key non-conference women's hockey victory at the Bill Gray's Regional Iceplex.
Ranked ninth nationally in the latest USCHO.com poll, the Golden Flyers will enter the holiday season with a perfect 12-0-0 record after big weekend wins over Hamilton and Amherst. The Golden Flyers will take a four-week break before resuming their United Collegiate Hockey Conference schedule at Stevenson Jan. 7-8.
Nazareth also defeated Hamilton, 2-1, on Friday. Amherst dropped to 2-5 overall.
Hailey Redders delivered a goal and an assist for the Golden Flyers as she surpassed the 100-point mark in career scoring. Playing in her 71st career game, Redders now has 101 points on 42 goals and 59 assists -- all program bests.
Madison Nichols and Nikolle Van Strahlen also scored.
Nazareth led 2-0 after one period on goals by Nichols and Van Strahlen. Nichols' goal came at 2:48 as she finished a behind-the-net feed from Redders for her eighth goal of the season.
Delaney Carle also gained an assist,
Van Strahlen's goal came at 14:50 as she tipped in a shot from the blue line by
Ivey Lyden, who gained the assist along with
Julia Holmes.
Those goals stood up until late into the third period, when Amherst scored to avert the shutout at 18:57. That came when the Mammoths pulled goaltender Caitlin Walker in favor of a sixth skater.
Then, following an Amherst timeout, Nazareth was able to seal the victory as Redders was able to steal the puck and send a long shot down the ice and into an empty net for the Golden Flyers' third goal with 22 seconds left.
Nazareth also received a strong game in goal from
Adrianna Brehm, who had 12 of her 25 saves in the third period. Nazareth also was successful in killing off five Amherst power plays.
