REISTERTOWN, Md. – Nazareth's women's hockey team followed a familiar script Tuesday as the Golden Flyers dominated much of the game against Stevenson before settling for a 2-1 road win over the Mustangs in a game that was rescheduled from the weekend.
Playing for the first time in 31 days, the seventh-ranked Golden Flyers improved to 13-0-0 overall and 9-0-0 in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference. Stevenson dropped to 5-6-0 overall and 4-3-0 in the UCHC. The teams play again Wednesday at 12 p.m.
The Golden Flyers dominated the action, highlighted by a 40-11 edge in shots on goal. However, Â Stevenson goaltender Olivia DeGuire turned Nazareth away time and again as she finished with 38 saves.
Nazareth was able to hold on following goals from
Stephanie Kubis and
Ally Watrous. The Golden Flyers had an array of opportunities in the third period, but DeGuire made 16 of her saves, including a flurry in the closing minutes.
Nazareth had a great opportunity to open the scoring in the first period following a pair of minor Mustang penalties left the Golden Flyers with a 5-on-3 power play advantage for about 90 seconds.
After the penalties expired, Kubis scored her third goal of the season about a minute later as she converted a shot from the blue line as
Keeley Rose and
Makenna Wiljanen gained assists.
Watrous' goal, her eighth of the season, came at 11:18 in the second period after a save by Nazareth goalie
McKinley Hoff.
Gabriella DeMeo redirected the puck to Watrous, who used her speed to race the length of the ice to score her eighth goal of the season.
Stevenson sliced the Nazareth lead in half about a minute later as Cassie Campbell lifted a shot past Hoff, who yielded her first career goal in her fifth career start.
Nazareth's third-period chances included one power play, but the Golden Flyers were unable to convert. Stevenson also had a power play following a penalty on Watrous for interference at 9:27. Nazareth's defense was equal to the challenge as the Mustangs were unable to generate a shot on goal during the two-minute sequence.
Hoff, in her fourth start of the season, was credited with 10 saves. Â
