PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Top-seeded St. John Fisher closed out Nazareth's women's volleyball season Saturday as the Cardinals downed the Golden Flyers in three tidy sets by scores of 25-19, 25-13, 25-16 to win the Empire 8 Conference championship on their home floor.
Fisher boosted its overall record to 26-4 by beating the Golden Flyers for the second time this season. The Cardinals also gained the accompanying automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament with the announcement scheduled for Monday afternoon. Nazareth, seeded third, closed its season at 14-11 overall.
Fisher was ultra efficient in posting a .352 hitting percentage (41-10-88), while limiting Nazareth to just 22 kills in the match.
Nazareth was most competitive in the opening set with a kill from
Kaylee Kelly resulted in an 18-16 lead for the Golden Flyers. The Cardinals responded with a eight-point scoring spree that ended with Fisher in command at 24-18. After a Nazareth kill by
Ruth Jackson interrupted the scoring run, Fisher's Alea Steigerwald closed the set with one of her match-high 12 kills.
Fisher's momentum spilled into the second and third sets as the Cardinals never trailed in either set. Fisher had 14 more kills in the second set and 12 in the third.
Kelly led Nazareth with five kills.
Tessa Grover and
Zoe Tylipakis each had four kills with Grover adding 13 assists. McKenzie had nine digs.
