ROCHESTER, NY – Seniors Hailey Redders and Abbey Luth each scored a pair of goals and Redders added an assist as the Nazareth College Women's Hockey team remained unbeaten with a 9-0 win over Wilkes University Friday night at the Bill Gray's Iceplex.
The win was the fourth consecutive shutout and the Golden Flyers (5-0 overall, 3-0 UCHC) have not allowed a goal in nearly 250 minutes of action dating back to the second period of the first game of the season. Nazareth has outscored opponents 35-1 this season.
The scoring came early for Nazareth as junior Makenna Wiljanen scored two minutes into the contest with seniors Christina Darby and Stephanie Kubis picking up assists.
Redders and Luth scored goals in a span of 2:03 later in the period to boost the total to 3-0. Luth scored on a rebound and Redders scored on a break-in from the blue line after a turnover.
Late in the period, senior Madison Nichols scored a power play goal with the help of Redders and senior Gabriella DeMeo for 4-0 lead in the opening period.
Luth scored her second goal of the game with Nazareth in a shorthanded situation five minutes into the second period before senior Maria DiCresce and senior Kyla Thompson each scored in a span of 1:31 to extend the lead to 7-0. DeMeo assists on the Luth goal and Kubis and freshman Sydney Swanson earned assists on the DiCresce tally. Thompson was assisted by senior co-captain Nikolle VanStralen and sophomore Kate Cascio.
Redders added her second goal of the night with an assist from sophomore Emma Hayes for an 8-0 edge and senior co-captain Keeley Rose capped the scoring with 35 seconds to play in the stanza. Rose was assisted by senior Elie Fallieras and junior Ally Watrous.
Nazareth dominated the stat sheet with a huge 64-3 edge in shots. Senior Noelle Giroux saved all three shots she faced while Ally Joly (19) and Addy Olson (36) combined for 55 saves in the Wilkes goal.
The same two teams play at 2 p.m. Saturday to complete the weekend series.
