ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth scored all three of its goals in the second half Saturday as the Golden Flyers produced a 3-0 women's soccer victory over Utica in a battle for first place in the Empire 8 Conference at Golden Flyer Stadium.
Nazareth stands alone as the only unbeaten and untied team in the E8 standings at 3-0. The Golden Flyers are 4-5-3 overall. Utica fell to 2-1 in league play and 6-4 overall.
The Golden Flyers dominated play for most of the game with a 32-6 advantage in shots and a 10-1 edge in corner kicks. Nazareth unleashed 19 shots in the first half, but were unable to produce a goal as Utica keeper Courtney Connolly made eight of her 14 saves.
Nazareth finally broke loose in the second half with three unanswered tallies, starting with the second goal of the season for freshman
Haley Glassman.
Mallory Ott lofted a pass from behind the midfield line that bounced over the head of a Utica defender before landing on Glassman's foot. Two dribbles later, Glassman ripped a right-footed shot over the outstretched finger tips of Connolly for the goal.
About eight minutes later,
Sydney Moss scored Nazareth's second goal as she one-timed a shot that bounced over the head of Connolly, who couldn't recover.
Less than two minutes later, grad student
Caleigh Cahoon scored for the second time this season after settling a right-wing crossing pass from
Maggie Hoey, who was credited with her first point for the Golden Flyers.
The Pioneers never seriously challenged thereafter as freshman
Annika Monfort finished with three routine saves to gain her sixth shutout of the season.
Nazareth continues its Empire 8 Conference schedule this week with a pair of road games. The Golden Flyers visit Houghton Wednesday evening for a 7:30 start, then travel to Russell Sage Saturday for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
