Box Score HOUGHTON, NY – Senior Maggie Hoey and Sydney Moss each scored goals in the first half to lead the Nazareth College Women's Soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Houghton College in an Empire 8 game Wednesday on Burke Field.
Moss scored with just 6:35 elapsed in the first half to give Nazareth (5-5-3 overall, 4-0-0 E8) the early lead.
The Golden Flyers controlled play for a majority of the first half with a 6-0 advantage in shots and Hoey capped a scoring play late in the half to extend the Nazareth lead to 2-0.
Junior Sarah Merriwether took a through pass and carried the ball past a pair of defenders before tapping a pass to senior Ashley Plane. It was Plane's shot that sailed over the head of the goalie and off the post to the foot of Hoey. Her first shot was blocked by a Houghton (5-6-1, 0-3-1 E8) defender but the rebound came back to Hoey who finished the play into the back of the net.
Nazareth finished with a commanding 11-1 shots advantage. Houghton's lone shot came on a run up the field late in the second half and freshman goalie Annika Monfort made a diving save to preserve the shutout.
The shutout win for Nazareth was the fourth consecutive shutout in Empire 8 play as the Golden Flyers have outscored league opponents 9-0 in four games.
The Golden Flyers will continue conference play at Russell Sage Saturday on the road.
