ONEONTA, NY – Junior Andrew Vogler and freshman Jake Pawlika each scored and freshman Drew Decker recorded his school-record 11th assist of the season to lead the Nazareth College Men's Soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Hartwick College Saturday afternoon.
The win keeps Nazareth (11-1-2 overall, 6-0-1) in first place in the Empire 8 standings but with two games remaining for second place Houghton, the Golden Flyers will have to wait until a head-to-head match-up with the Highlanders Wednesday to determine the top seed in the conference tournament.
Nazareth opened the scoring midway through the first half as Vogler scored with an assist from Pawlika.
The score remained 1-0 until late in the second half when the Golden Flyers took a 2-0 lead.
Deckers dribbled the ball up the left side and into the box before sending a crossing pass to the far post to the foot of Pawlika who tapped in the goal.
The assist was the 11th of the season for Decker who ties the school record that was set by Jefferson Dargout who recorded 11 assists as a junior transfer for Nazareth in 2002. The goal for Pawlika is his 11th of the year and puts him in sixth place on the all-time list for goals in a season.
Hartwick (6-7-2, 1-5-1) scored with five minutes left to break up the shutout effort for Nazareth.
The Golden Flyers finish the regular season Wednesday with a 3 p.m. home game against Houghton.
