ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Freshman
Drew Decker scored a goal and equaled a school record with three assists Saturday as Nazareth overwhelmed Russell Sage in an Empire 8 men's soccer match, 6-1 at Golden Flyer Stadium.
The victory was the seventh in a row for the Golden Flyers, who improved to 8-1-1 overall and 3-0 in the Empire 8. The Gators dropped to 4-5-1 overall and 0-3 in conference games. Nazareth also won its 15th straight home game despite having its shutout streak snapped at more than 400 minutes.
Cooper LaValley added a pair of goals and
Zein Mohamed and
Jake Pawlika each added a goal and an assist as Nazareth controlled the action most of the way. Senior
Colin Brickwood also delivered his fourth goal of the season.
Decker became the fourth Nazareth soccer player to produce three assists in one game. Griff Hannel did it first in 1988; Jefferson Dargot matched that in 2002; and Christopher Rowland did it most recently in 2016.
Decker literally had his foot in the first four Nazareth goals, including his second goal of the season in the 14th minute when he redirected a crossing pass originating on the right wing from Pawlika. Less than three minutes later, Decker delivered a beautiful cross from the left end line that ended with LaValley scoring on a diving header.
After the Gators ended Nazareth's shutout streak that spanned parts of six games with a goal in the closing minute of the first half, the Golden Flyers regained their two-goal cushion in the 58th minute as LaValley scored again off a cross from Decker.
Nine minutes after that, a shot from the left side by Brickwood found the lower right corner of the goal with Decker gaining his record-tying assist. He leads the Golden Flyers on the season with eight assists.
Pawlika added his team-leading ninth goal off an assist from Mohamed in the 78th minute and Mohamed closed out the scoring with an unassisted tally in the 85th minute.
Nazareth had advantages in shots (19-12) and corner kicks (5-3), Freshman
Logan Menna had seven saves for Nazareth while Nolan Murphy had 11 for the Gators.
Nazareth is idle until Saturday when the Golden Flyers resume their Empire 8 Conference schedule at Utica at 12 p.m.
