Field Hockey Snaps Skid with 3-1 Home Win

ROCHESTER, NY – Junior Bailey Selman had been limited to just one goal for the season but broke loose for three goals as the Nazareth College Field Hockey team snapped a five-game losing streak with a key 3-1 victory over Houghton College Saturday in an Empire 8 game on the Artificial Turf Field.

After a scoreless first quarter, Houghton (4-8 overall, 2-3 E8) scored to take the lead five minutes into the second quarter with a goal by Cedar Smith off a penalty corner for the lead.

Six minutes later, Selman took control of the ball for Nazareth (4-9, 3-2 E8) near midfield after the restart and carried the ball all the way into the circle and fired a shot past the Houghton goalie to tie the game at 1-1.

The goal was the second of the season for Selman who entered the game second on the team in scoring with a goal and five assists.

The teams entered the halftime intermission with the 1-1 scored and the score remained the same through the third quarter but early in the final period, Selman scored again to give Nazareth a lead.

After a restart outside the circle, junior Grace Wasileski fired a shot from the edge of the circle that was blocked by a defender but the ball landed on the stick of Selman and she took a hard shot from 15 yards out past the goalie for the lead.

Nazareth held the lead for the next several minutes as Houghton continued to apply offensive pressure to tie the game.

Selman gave the Golden Flyers a two-goal advantage late in the quarter on a penalty corner as freshman Bella Rehermann started the play and sent a shot pass to Selman who tipped the ball into the circle before firing a shot into the back of the goal for the 3-1 Nazareth lead.

Nazareth held a 14-10 edge in shots including a 5-1lead in the final quarter of play. Both teams had eight penalty corner opportunities and senior Amanda Chuttey made five saves in the Nazareth goal.

The Golden Flyers continue Empire 8 play Wednesday at Elmira and return home Saturday for a conference match-up against Hartwick.
