Nazareth outscores Ohio Northern, 11-4

Golden Flyers (3-2) play next two in Tampa, Fla.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Jeremy Jacob and Colin McElligott each had five points for the Golden Flyers Saturday as Nazareth defeated visiting Ohio Northern in a non-conference men's lacrosse game, 11-4, on the newly anointed Nazareth Lacrosse Players Association Turf Field.

Nazareth scored the first four goals in the first-ever meeting between the two teams and improved to 3-2 overall. The Polar Bears from Ada, Ohio dropped to 4-2 overall. Jacob had four goals and one assist and McElligott had three goals and two assists to fuel the Golden Flyers' offense. Kevin Hussey and Jon Roth each had two goals and one assist.

Nazareth had large statistical advantages in shots (58-31), ground balls (43-19) and face-offs (14-5), but ONU goalie Cole Zaferakis thwarted the Golden Flyers several times by making 15 saves.

Nazareth got off the a good start with Jacob and Hussey scoring just 29 seconds apart early in the first quarter for a 2-0 lead. McElligott and Hussey each scored again before the quarter ended. Ohio Northern countered with an extra-man goal in the closing minute for a 4-1 score.

Nazareth unleashed 18 more shots in the second quarter and scored three more times, including a man-up goal by Roth with a minute to go. Jacob also scored a man-down goal early in the quarter with long-stick Owen Penoyer picking up the assist for his second career point. McElligott also scored in the second quarter and another in the fourth quarter. Jacob added one goal each in the third and fourth quarters and Roth also picked up his second goal. Jon Lippert and freshman Clifford Pollard had assists.

Tim Vinton was dominant on face-offs in winning 14 of 19 draws and scooping up seven ground balls. Owen Gonzalez and Tristan Gosselin were active as face-off wings and scooped up seven and six ground balls respectively. Eric Almquist started and played most of the game in goal and made 12 saves. Alex Winkler played the last seven minutes of the fourth quarter.

Nazareth embarks on its spring break junket to Florida with games scheduled for Tuesday vs. DeSales at 4:30 p.m. and Saturday vs. Western New England at 7 p.m. Both games will be played at the University of Tampa.
