Second quarter flurry lifts Nazareth past DeSales, 17-11

TAMPA, Fla. -- Nazareth used an 11-goal flurry between the first and second quarters Tuesday to erase an early deficit and the Golden Flyers went on to defeat DeSales 17-11 in the first-ever men's lacrosse meeting between the two schools.

The Golden Flyers opened their spring break trip at the University of Tampa in successful fashion as they won for the third straight time to improve to 4-2 overall. DeSales also is 4-2.

Jeremy Jacob paced the Nazareth offense with four goals and one assist and Kevin Hussey added three goals and one assist. Jon Roth had two goals and two assists and Tim Vinton contributed two goals and one assist and won 16 of 29 face-offs with 12 ground balls.

DeSales had a 4-2 lead with less than six minutes to play in the first quarter, but Nazareth got a goal from Jacob and two from Hussey to close out the quarter, touching off an 11-goal outburst that ended with the Golden Flyers in command at 13-4 with 2:22 left in the first half.

In the second quarter Jacob and Roth each scored twice with Roth's second goal coming with a man advantage. Vinton, Andre White, Jon Lippert and Tate Martinez also delivered goals.

Two late second-quarter goals by DeSales trimmed the lead to 13-6 before halftime, but Hussey scored for Nazareth in the opening minute of the third quarter to keep the momentum in Nazareth's favor. Nazareth scored four more times in the third quarter with Drew McNerney delivering an extra-man goal, Tim Parrinello generating his first goal of the season and Vinton scoring his second goal of the game after a face-off win seven seconds after Parrinello's goal.

Tristan Gosselin also had a goal and two assists with four ground balls from his long-stick midfield position.

Eric Almquist played the first three quarters in goal and had five saves. Alex Winkler had five more saves in the fourth quarter and Carson Pickeral had three more.

Nazareth plays again in Tampa Saturday against Western New England at 7 p.m.
