TAMPA, Fla. -- In what was most likely their final game of the 2020 season, Nazareth dominated The College of Wooster in a non-conference men's lacrosse game played Saturday at the University of Tampa, winning convincingly 23-7 in just the second meeting ever between the two schools.
The Golden Flyers (5-2 overall) were originally scheduled to play Western New England, but that game fell through due to travel restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Nazareth was able to schedule a game with Wooster instead and the Golden Flyers were able to pay tribute prior to the game to their 14 seniors, all of whom played key roles in the victory.
Senior
Kevin Hussey scored five goals and added two assists and
Drew McNerney added four goals and three assists. Long-stick midfielder
Tristan Gosselin wreaked his usual havoc and scored three goals and added an assist. He also collected five ground balls. Senior midfielder
Jon Lippert also scored three times.
Goal scorers also included seniors
Walker Denton, who scored twice, long-stick defenseman
Matthew Townsend and midfielder
Joe O'Hare. Seniors
Griffin Avery,
Joe Fisher and
Colin McElligott each had assists and
Alex Winkler gained the start in goal and had 11 saves and four ground balls.
Tim Vinton also had a goal and won 24 of 33 face-offs with 10 ground balls.
Owen Penoyer and
Parker Lawrence also started on defense and each had two ground balls.
Nazareth never trailed in he game as Vinton and McNerney each scored in the opening minute of play. After Wooster got on the board, Nazareth scored the next four goals to take command. Lippert, McNerney and Hussey each scored as did sophomore midfielder
Jon Roth. Townsend added his second career goal in the second quarter and Gosselin scored his first of three goals as Nazareth went up 8-3 before halftime.
Nazareth scored eight more times in the third quarter to break the game open. Hussey scored three times and McNerney twice. The Golden Flyers tallied seven more times in the fourth quarter, including the first goal of the season for O'Hare, who finished off an extra-man pass from Hussey. Denton added both of his goals and
Jon Parrinello and
Andre White also contributed goals.
Nazareth finished with large advantages in shots (62-36) and ground balls (52-19) and Vinton took all of Nazareth's 33 face-offs.
The end of the season comes in bittersweet fashion for the Golden Flyers and their 14 seniors after it was announced earlier in the week that the spring season has been canceled because of the uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 virus.
"It's really is all so disappointing that it has to end like this," said Nazareth Coach
Rob Randall. "I'm very proud of all our seniors and what they've been able to accomplish as lacrosse players and great ambassadors for our program."
