OSWEGO, NY – A goal by sophomore Abbey Luth gave the Nazareth College women's hockey team an early lead but the Golden Flyers needed a late rally to trim an Oswego lead before falling 3-2 to the Lakers Sunday afternoon in a non-conference game.
Luth gave Nazareth (15-3-3) an early lead as the sophomore tapped in a rebound from a shot by fellow sophomore Gabriella DeMeo from the point. Sophomore Hailey Redders also picked up an assist on the play as Nazareth led 1-0 with just 1:06 elapsed in the first period.
The slim lead held until the second period when Oswego (12-6-4) scored with a cluster of players battling for the puck in front on sophomore goalie Adrianna Brehm. Nearly all of the players lost sight of the puck before it ended up in the back of the net as the Lakers tied the score 3:27 into the second stanza.
With less than two minutes left in the second period, Oswego controlled the puck behind the Nazareth goal and moved it out to the slot area to score the go-ahead goal. The teams headed to the second intermission with Oswego holding a 2-1 lead.
Midway through the third period, Oswego stretched the lead to 3-1 with a shot from the point that went past Brehm as she was screened on the play.
In the final minutes, Nazareth pulled the goalie for the extra attacker and sophomore Maria Di Cresce knocked in a loose puck in front of the net to trim the lead to just a goal at 3-2 with 27 seconds left to play in regulation.
The Golden Flyers had a late chance to even the score but sophomore Nikolle Van Stralen had the puck knocked off her stick in the slot as time expired in the game.
Brehm finished with 27 saves including 10 in the third period as Oswego held a 30-24 edge in shots.
The loss was just the second in the last 16 games for Nazareth and the Golden Flyers will return to United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) play Friday with a 3:30 pm game against Wilkes at the Bill Gray's Iceplex.
