ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore Kyla Thompson scored twice with power play goals in the second and third periods to lead the Nazareth College women's hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Wilkes in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) game at the Bill Gray's Iceplex.
Nazareth (16-3-3 overall, 10-1-2 UCHC) took an early lead as freshman Rae Rice skated from behind the net and sent a wrist shot past Wilkes (4-14-1, 3-9-1 UCHC) goalie Ally Joly just 1:29 into the game for the early lead.
Wilkes surprised Nazareth with a rare offensive rush up the ice midway through the first period and tied the game on a rebounded shot.
In the second period, sophomore Madison Nichols collected a rebound that had slipped past the Wilkes goalie and tapped in the go-ahead goal three minutes into the period.
Thompson made it a two-goal lead at the 11:34 mark with the first of her two power play goals as she tipped in a shot from the point coming from the stick of sophomore Keeley Rose.
In the third period, Nazareth stretched the lead to 4-1 as Thompson scored another on the power play as the Golden Flyers finished two-for-five on the man advantage.
Nazareth controlled the play for almost the entire game with a dominating 72-8 advantage including an edge of 54-3 over the final two periods of play.
Nazareth is back on the ice Saturday and will host King's in the final regular season home game. The Golden Flyers wrap up the regular season at Elmira and William Smith before the start of the UCHC playoffs.
