ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting Lasell scored the final four points of the match Saturday as the Lasers outlasted Nazareth to win a five-set men's volleyball match on day two of the Nazareth Invitational at the Kidera Gymnasium. Scores were 25-19, 25-22, 19-25, 13-25, 15-13. Later in the day, the Golden Flyers dropped an equally tough four-setter to UC Santa Cruz by scores of 30-28, 25-22, 23-25, 25-21.
The two setbacks left the Golden Flyers with a 1-3 record from their own weekend tournament and dropped them to 3-8 overall. Nazareth also dropped a five-set match to Geneva College on Friday after sweeping D'Youville in three sets.
A late flurry by the Lasers prevented the Golden Flyers from completing a rally from two sets down in their first match.
Antonio Sargent had 18 kills and six digs to lead the Golden Flyers, who also received 12 kills and four blocks from
Sean Dillon.
Luis Vazquez contributed 21 assists and nine digs.
In the decisive fifth set, each team spotted the other three service errors, but Nazareth finally inched ahead 13-11 following a kill by Sargent and a combined block by Vazquez and
Joe Crosby. Lasell, however, went on to take the next four points to win the match. Kills by Brenden Joyce and Scott Sterenberg were followed by a pair of Nazareth attacking errors to end the match.
After Lasell won the first two sets, Nazareth came back with better defense in the third set, as Vazquez contributed three digs and a service ace, and better hitting efficiency in the fourth set with a collective .609 percentage and four kills by Sargent.
Freshmen
Kaleb Luton and
Nate Allen each finished with eight kills and sophomore
Jason Proud had 27 assists.
In the second match against the Banana Slugs from UC Santa Cruz, Sargent posted a career-best 20 kills and Vazquez amassed 43 assists and seven digs. Dillon added 13 kills and Luton had 10.
Seth Terzo had 13 digs from his libero position. The Golden Flyers were ultimately done in by 30 attacking errors and 19 service errors.
