ROCHESTER, NY – Four players recorded double-digit kills led by junior Antonio Sargent with 18 for the Nazareth College men's volleyball team but it was not enough as Geneva College escaped with a five-set victory and the Golden Flyers ended the first day of the 15th Annual Nazareth Invitational with a split.
The Golden Flyers (3-6) had won a 3-0 victory over D'Youville earlier in the day winning by set scores of 25-20, 25-21 and 25-23. Nazareth won the first set against Geneva (9-4) with a 25-19 victory but the Golden Tornadoes rebounded to win the second and third sets by scores of 25-22 and 27-25. Nazareth forced the fifth set with a 25-20 win in the fourth but Geneva used a 4-1 run early to take a lead before winning 15-12 in the tie-breaker set.
Against D'Youville, senior Sean Dillon led Nazareth with 12 kills, three aces and four blocks.
Sargent nine kills and a pair of blocks while freshman Kaleb Luton chipped in eight kills and four blocks. Senior Luis Vazquez had 32 assists while freshman Seth Terzo and Sargent led the defense with six digs each.
In the Geneva match, senior Joe Crosby had 16 kills and a .560 attack percentage and Dillon added 15 kills and a .591 percentage while Luton was credited with 12 kills for Nazareth. Vazquez had a career high 59 assists and also led the team with 15 digs.
The tournament continues Saturday as Nazareth takes on Lasell College at 11 a.m. and the University of California Santa Cruz in a 3 p.m. match to close out the tournament.
