Antonio Sargent had a match-best 18 kills and
Joe Crosby and
Sean Dillon each added 13 kills as Nazareth outlasted host Elmira in a five-set non-conference men's volleyball match. Scores were 25-18, 21-25, 25-23, 28-30, 15-9.
Sargent had a pair of kills in the fifth and deciding set and
Luis Vazquez had a service ace on match point as Nazareth won its fourth straight match to improve to 7-11 overall. Elmira dropped to 5-12. The teams meet again at Nazareth in a United Volleyball Conference match on March 25.
The fifth set was tied at 5-5 before Nazareth eventually pulled away. Sargent had a kill that touched off a 10-4 run that closed out the match. Vazquez and
Kaleb Luton each had kills during the scoring run that ended with Vazquez's ace.
Sargent had four kills in the opening set and Dillon had three as Nazareth rolled. Dillon had four more kills and two aces in a close third set that ended on a kill by Sargent and an Elmira ball-handling error. In the fourth set, Crosby had eight of his kills, but the Soaring Eagles were able to force the fifth set.
Nazareth hit a collective .248 (52-24-113) and had 16 blocks compared to Elmira's eight.
Jason Proud amassed 49 assists and four aces and Luton had six kills and seven blocks.
Nazareth is back on the road this weekend for a pair of UVC matches. The Golden Flyers visit Sage Friday at 7 p.m. and Vassar Saturday at 12 p.m. They also have a non-conference match against Hunter at 2 p.m.
