ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth scored the first three goals of the game Wednesday and held off Wells in the second half for a 3-1 men's soccer victory in a non-conference game on the Golden Flyers' artificial turf field.
Although they yielded their first goal of the season late in the second half, the Golden Flyers remained unbeaten at 3-0 overall, while Wells dropped to 1-2.
Freshman
Noah Malta scored his third goal of the season in the 18th minute of the first half to put the Golden Flyers on the scoreboard. Malta was able to finish off a crossing pass from
Zein Mohamed, who was credited with the assist.
Junior
Jake Adams put Nazareth up 2-0 in the 53rd minute after he was able to settle a long pass from the foot of Nazareth goalkeeper
Brian Wilkin. Adams dribbled past a Wells defender and scored his first goal of the season.
About nine minutes later Adams gained an assist on a picturesque goal by
Adrian Padilla, who headed in a crossing pass for his first career tally.
Wells finally broke Nazareth's season-opening scoreless string that reached nearly 250 minutes as Nathan Soliman was able to beat Wilkin for an unassisted score.
Nazareth had an 18-11 edge in shots and a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Wilkin made six saves, including one in the first half on which he punched the ball over the crossbar on a shot by Wells' Junger Vargas. Colton Jaquith was in goal for the Express and was credited with eight saves.
Nazareth plays its next game on the road at Alfred State Saturday at 7 p.m.
