ALFRED STATION, NY – JuniorAmanda Rice came off the bench and scored the only goal of the game for the Nazareth College women's soccer team but Alfred answered back midway through the second half and the teams played two scoreless overtime periods before settling for a 1-1 tie Saturday night.
Rice was inserted as a sub in the 35th minute for Nazareth (4-2-1 overall, 0-0-1 E8) and then scored the first goal of the game five minutes later with an assist from freshman McKayla Hughes.
The game remained 1-0 until the 72nd minute with Alfred (4-1-2, 0-0-1) applying pressure. Nazareth goalie Hannah Miller made the initial save but the rebound was collected in front of the net and knocked in to tie the game.
With the score 1-1 at the end of regulation play, the teams played a pair of 10-minute overtime periods but neither team managed to net the game winner. Nazareth had the lone shot on goal in the overtime periods.
Miller finished with six saves for Nazareth.
The Golden Flyers had won 21 consecutive games over Alfred before the tie and have not lost to the Saxons since a 3-2 loss in 1994.
The Golden Flyers return to action next Saturday at home with an Empire 8 game against Elmira.
